Lake Lure Land Real Estate in Rutherfordton, NC

Lake Lure, the location of the 'Dirty Dancing' filming, is a favorite destination for many.

We like to think of Lake Lure as Rutherford County's crown jewel. Surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Lure was created in 1924 under the direction of Dr. Lucius Morse, with the intention of developing a health resort. With its public access and location adjacent to North Carolina's new Chimney Rock State Park, the sheer beauty and abundant recreation offered by Lake Lure continually draws visitors from around the globe. The rest of us in Rutherford County enjoy being left to our own activities.

The town of Lake Lure's website offers an abundance of information, from the bridge replacement progress over the Rocky Broad River, to virtual tours, to the town's vacation rental requirements. This quiet little hamlet tucked at the end of the Hickory Nut gorge is up to speed with web-based public notices, emergency notifications, and development plans. The town government is a mayor/council format, and the popular mayor has been re-elected several times. Embracing a conservative attitude toward change, most residents enjoy seeing the current small-town atmosphere remain intact.

Hotel at Lake Lure in western NC

The circa 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa is one of the older remaining North Carolina landmarks, built when the waters of Lake Lure first began to fill. Over the years, the Inn has hosted a diverse range of celebrities, from F. Scott Fitzgerald, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Emily Post, and Calvin Coolidge, to Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey during the filming of Dirty Dancing. With its great restaurant and a relaxing spa, stop and enjoy a little luxury while you take in the history. Simply a great place to stay when you're visiting Lake Lure.

Hickory Nut Gorge opening to Lake Lure in western NC   The Hickory Nut Gorge provides a natural gap in the mountain range, and was used by early settlers to travel west. Flowing along the valley floor is the Rocky Broad River, which empties into Lake Lure. In 1830's, a stagecoach ran a regular route through Hickory Nut Gorge from Rutherfordton to Asheville, now known as US Highway 74A.
